Ok, we’ve all had time to try out Google Chrome. There have undoubtedly been some great things about it, while at the same time there have been huge question marks. The largest question on everybody’s mind seems to be, “Where are the Add-Ons?”.
My answer is that they simply haven’t been created yet. Google Chrome is open source, so all you crafty devs out there have the platform to work on. You just need some ideas. Here are some ideas I’ve come up with in my short extent with the browser.
YouTube Viewer Plug-In: The title might seem pretty vauge and general, but I’ll explain what I mean by ‘YouTube Viewer Plug-In. I’d like to see an add-on that takes YouTube and makes it into a small screen widget. Let’s say it could go at the bottom left corner of the Google Chrome browser. When you’re not using it, there could be a small icon with the YouTube logo on it.
When you decide you want to look for a YouTube video, you can scroll over the icon and it expands into a miniature YouTube viewer. There could be a search bar underneath it for looking up YouTube videos, and you could do all of it without having to load the actual page. There could also be an option where if you load a page and a YouTube video is present, a choice would appear. You could have the video load in the YouTube viewer, and have the viewer center itself on the screen so you could have you full focus on the YouTube video.
Google Chrome Application Bar: The ability to save web pages, and sites as applications is one of the big draws of Google Chrome. When you start up your OS, you can open sites totally independent of the Google Chrome browser.
What’s your options for if you have Google Chrome open, and you want to open these applications? As of now you have to minimize the browser window to find the icon, which isn’t a hassle but doesn’t add to the streamlined feel of the browser. With an application bar built into Google Chrome, you could load your favorite application pages from within the browser without having to look for them on your computer. This might not be a major idea, but something that could add to the functionality of Google Chrome.
Seemless Integration With WordPress: You could use this idea for any blog creation service, but WordPress is what I use so it’s something I’d like to see. After reading over a post, it can be a minor annoyance to have to go back into wp-admin to make changes to your post.
If there’s a way with Google Chrome’s code, how about having to where you could make quick edits to your posts on the actual site. So if I had a spelling error I didn’t catch on this post, I could just click a button and save a quick edit without going into the wp-admin menu. This would be a huge time saver for people who make updates to alot of their posts.
I just listed a few Google Chrome Add-On Ideas. In the short time that Chrome has been out, are there any others you’d like to see in the near future?
