Personas: Firefox extension

Mozilla’s Chris Beard has released a very early version of Personas, a Firefox extension that provides another way of customization to Firefox. Personas are lightweight designs that “skin” the Firefox web browser. Delivered as a web service, the menu interface and the Persona designs are exceptionally dynamic, and should allow for a wide range of interesting possibilities.

Ideas behind this prototype :

  1. people just want have more fun with their computer
  2. browsers can be more than just desktop software, they can include online components
  3. themes today are too hard to find, install and use
  4. graphic designers should be able to style the browser without having to code

Real time customization for Firefox with Personas

In this version, the Persona selector is dynamically loaded and populated from a JSON feed and all designs are loaded via URLs to remote resources. All changes to the browser chrome are applied instantly, with no need to restart.

Shortly, API will be released that will allow developers and designers to submit Personas that are based on Web content, including support for anything that can load in a content window such as HTML, CSS, PNG, JPG, Javascript, SVG and Canvas.

Interesting Features

  1. You are aloowed to select a Persona from the dynamic menus and see results instantly without having to discover, select, download or install any software or code.
  2. Personas can be added, removed or updated by their designers at any time, without the need of a software update.
